For the month of December, the Daems family will now be known as the Griswold family, with Jeff becoming Mr. Christmas himself, Clark Griswold. Of course I'm referencing the classic (at least in my family) Christmas movie, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and it's Christmas crazed patriarch. No, Jeff isn't quite as goofy or obsessed as good ol' Clark, but his love of large Christmas trees, colorful lights, and Christmas decor is reminiscent of Mr. Griswold himself.
Our venture into Griswold land started on Sunday with the hunt for the Christmas tree. No, we didn't go cut down a tree from a forest. We did go to our favorite lot, and wouldn't you know it, Jeff made a beeline for the largest, most beastly tree on that lot. It was like he had built in honing device for THAT tree! At 13 feet tall, the tree was a must for our home.
Tree decorating took up the rest of the afternoon and was a true family event. Nicholas was excited to climb the ladder to hang ornaments, as well as helping Daddy put up the star (which could only be done from the upstairs loft!). Lexi didn't care as much about the ornaments as she did trying to climb the ladder. And Jeff and I, like we do every year, loved reminiscing about where we were and what we did as we unwrapped each ornament. Like little time capsules...some of which date back to my very first Christmas in 1981.
Towards the end of decorating, Nana and Baba came over to give the kids new ornaments. I love that my mom is continuing the tradition of her own mother, my Grammy, who lovingly chose a new ornament for my sisters and myself every Christmas, until she became too sick to continue the tradition. This year, Lexi's ornament was a miniature See-And-Say toy, since she loves to play with the real thing at my parent's house. Nicholas received a replica of Luke Skywalker's snowspeeder from The Empire Strikes Back. Both ornaments talk, which the kids love.
It was a great way to kick off the holiday season. Now, it's time for Clark, er, Jeff, to get on the roof and hang the lights!
